The Obelisk - Carlton Melton Premiere “Spirit Lens”; New Album Reason Beings Out Sept. 18
They don’t have a chime or anything, but that first hi-hat hit at the start of “Spirit Lens” might be considered like a call to prayer for those who worship West Coast jam-psych. The guitar of Rich Millman carries a distinctively ethereal howl and the conversation with Taibi and the rhythmic underpinning from bassist Clint Golden and drummer Andy Duvall become like two simultaneous threads extracted from your consciousness, running in intersecting lines toward the center of the galaxy and, if you want, bringing you with them. Maybe this is a trip you’ve made before with Carlton Melton, but “Spirit Lens” offers invigorating shimmer and a mounting swell of noise, summarizing the album in a way but without giving up the entrancing repetition of the drums as it eventually will in “The Absence of Sensation.” The last minute finds them in a fleeting but full wash, with shred even in the comedown before “Comes Fire” takes hold to finish side A with its own extended throb.- JJ

Carlton Melton track 'War Cry' included in Psych Against Cancer Vol 3
When a loved one is diagnosed with cancer, the emotional impact on their family can be profound and far-reaching. Family members often experience a rollercoaster of emotions—shock, fear, sadness, and helplessness—as they wrestle with the uncertainty of the illness and the demands of caregiving. The stress of managing medical appointments, financial strain, and shifting family roles can lead to anxiety and burnout, especially when trying to remain strong for the patient. Children may feel confused or scared, while spouses and siblings might struggle with grief, guilt, or isolation. These effects on sufferers and their families highlight the importance of organisations like MacMillan Cancer Support who provide specialist health care, information and financial support to people affected by cancer. It also looks at the social, emotional and practical impact cancer can have, and campaigns for better cancer care.
As with the previous compilations, all proceeds from this album will go directly to MacMillan Support. As ever, a HUGE thanks to all artists and bands who submitted a track… you are all wonderful people

J Hubner reviews Carlton Melton LIVE EU / Complex Distraction— Carlton Melton, one of the West Coast’s premier psych rock explorers, have been at it now for going on two decades. Andy Duvall(drums and guitar), Clint Golden(bass), Rich Millman(guitar/synth), and Anthony Taibi(synth/guitar) have created their own world of psychedelic swirls, monolithic drones, scuzzy blues, and widescreen jams with a view out of the dusty windshield of a ’69 Malibu. The open road both their portal into the cosmos and a landing strip to destinations along the way.

DR SPACE REVIEWS CARLTON MELTON LIVE ALBUM— This is a site where I post reviews of CDs, DVDs, LPs, and concerts. I have been writing music reviews on and off since 1984. I ran a heavy metal fanzine from 1984-1988 called Metal Madness and have been a staff writer for Aural Innovations for many years. I have also contributed to Chrohinga Well (RIP), Bad Acid (RIP), Lowcut (RIP), Roadburn and a number of other zines as well. I recently moved to Portugal so please request the new address and do not send any music to Denmark anymore. Tak..
If you like the mood and feeling of the band, then you will for sure dig this. They never play anything exactly like the records, it is about going out into space and exploring the other side with these guys… Great band..

Carlton Melton is at home in California and the musical heritage of the region is their mission. They play instrumental West Coast Jam Rock. The recipe for this original soup goes back to classics like Quicksilver Messenger Service, The Grateful Dead, the middle byrds and obscure bands of that time like Fraction and many others that Patrick Lundborg brought together in »The Acid Archives«. Carlton Melton enriches their psychedelic cocktail with a pinch of Japrock à la Flower Travellin' Band and a touch of Hawkwind and in this musical neighborhood there are quite a few contemporary bands that do the same.
